Blackstrap Canals

The Blackstrap Canals route is a scenic gravel adventure that explores one of Saskatchewan's most unique engineering landscapes. Beginning at the Bike Doctor bike shop, the route takes you out of town where you hit the gravel roads and some potentially tricky sandy double track alongside CFD Dundurn. Soon the north end of Blackstrap lake appears where you enter the Blackstrap Irrigation Canal system. Once again use caution through here as there can be large holes in the canal roads made by badgers or gophers. Sometimes these holes can be large enough to make for a very bad day should you hit one.

This an excellent endurance route where pacing and nutrition become just as important as fitness.

The route combines fast gravel, quiet secondary roads, and short sections of pavement. Riders can expect changing scenery throughout the day, from broad agricultural landscapes to sheltered sections following the canals and coulees. On windy days the ride can become significantly more demanding, so checking the forecast before setting out is recommended.

With few services on the route, there are some in the town of Clavet, riders should carry sufficient nutrition and repair supplies for a full day on the bike.
