Oro Lake Overnighter Bike Packing - 118km

Avonlea, SK

Description:

If you are looking for a short but somewhat challenging overniter, then this route has everything. Park out of the way in the arena parking lot on Main street.

The route heads west over Asylum Alley, a 6km roller coaster that gives you a perfect view of the Cactus Hills to the west. After descending Asylum Alley you head south up a 6km climb to reveal a spectacular view of the Dirt Hills area.

Continuing south you will have continuous rolling gravel until you reach the paved park entrance. But don't be fooled, you have a steep punchy climb just before Oro Lake reveals itself.

Oro Lake has gone through some transformations from a regional park to now a park that is maintained by the local RM's. Campsites are not clearly marked but be respectful and return picnic tables to original position. During the season, there are flush toilets and water, but boil the water.

The return route takes you up one of the prettiest climbs in southern Saskatchewan to give you a long downhill to the sleepy hamlet of Spring Valley. After leaving Spring Valley you will head back over the Dirt Hills via Asylum Alley. But before you reach the west approach you will have a series of short punchy climbs.

The west side is perhaps a little kinder than the East side. Once you reach the top, no, the next top, you will be rewarded with one of the most fun downhills around.

There is traffic on Asylum Alley, so be very careful and aware when climbing these short hills. Visibility is poor, so you should be to the right as much as possible.

Email or etransfer the Oro Lake park administrator to let them know you would like to overnite, the fee in 2025 was $15 per night. Oro Lake is surprisingly serene and beautiful but there are seasonal campers, who will be keeping an eye on you.

Please conduct yourself so others can return.
