Gravel
King Louie XXL - 237km
Esterhazy, SK
Description:
Parking is available anywhere in the area of the start point.
This is a mixed surface ride starting with pavement that eventually descends into the Qu'Appelle Valley. Then you wind through the town of Tantallon (Co-op store for supplies), the Finn Colony, and head West along the river gravel road until you meetup with highway 247 where it's paved for the remainder of the route.
Notable stops are at Round Lake (Lakeside Tavern and Grill for supplies), Crooked Lake and then you climb out of the valley on highway 47 and then continue on highway 22 and the town of Grayson (Ottenbreit meats store), Stockholm (Stockholm foods store) Eastward back to Esterhazy.
This route passes by many potash mines, bison ranches, the rolling hills of the Qu'Appelle Valley, provincial parks, historic settlements and is front loaded in terms of climbing and gravel terrain.
Given it's length you will want to ride this between May and September and on a dry day as the gravel can get greasy.
Resupply points are spaced nicely and there are bailout options at 637 grid, highway 9, 638 grid, and 605 grid if you wanted to shorten up the route before you reach Crooked Lake. Traffic is light but seasonal surges exist along the 247 and 47 and these roads have minimal to no shoulder.
